It has been a busy summer in the Finden household. Actually, it seems like we’ve been busy all year! Mindy taught another class at the local college, helping aspiring authors of every stripe navigate through the darkness between an idea and a book. She’s got a real knack for helping writers get going in the right direction. I was privileged to speak to her most recent class about my writing process. Ted D. Berner, author of Proof, also spoke to the students about publishing and marketing. It was enjoyable for me to answer questions, and to define my own creative process.
Summer means that vendor show season is upon us. I set up my booth at the 67th Annual Miles City Bucking Horse Sale in May, and had a grand time signing books and visiting with patrons, who travel from all over the United States and Canada. There were street dances and horse races all weekend, in addition to matched bronc-riding and even a bucking bull sale. Miles City is surely cowboy country, and I loved it. We visited the Range Riders Museum and were fascinated by 150 years worth of history. If you get the chance, the Bucking Horse Sale is worth going to.
We visited Buffalo, Wyoming for Longmire Days in early July. The whole town transforms into Durant, Wyoming, the fictitious headquarters for Craig Johnson’s main character, Sherriff Walt Longmire. Events went on all over town throughout the weekend, and we even stole a few minutes with Craig. A highlight of the weekend was participating in the Fan Talent Show, which was judged by cast members of the Netflix television show. Adam Bartley (Deputy Ferguson), A. Martinez (Jacob Nighthorse), Zahn McClarnon (Matthias), Louanne Stephens (Ruby), and John Bishop (Bob Barnes) voted on the top ten acts and awarded a prize to the winner. I didn’t place, but it was a great experience.
This coming week, I’ll be working on my next Daniel Foss book. It will be available in the fall. Between launching a new title and hunting, it looks like our busy streak will continue for quite some time.
Be well, everyone.
